FAQs - Playstation - Dance Dance Revolution

The first console release to hit the US shores was released in 2000. Dance Dance Revolution is a combination of parts of 2nd Mix and 3rd Mix with a sampling of songs from both releases. Dance Dance Revolution was also available in a bundle with the original Konami softpad. Unlike all of the Japanese releases to that point, the US release of Dance Dance Revolution featured no unlockable items or secret surprises.

Game Modes

  • Game Mode (Single, Versus, Unison, Double)
  • Workout Mode
  • Lesson Mode
  • Training Mode
At the time DDR US was released, veteran players were already used to Basic, Trick, Maniac, and SSR. However, these difficulty labels were unused in DDR US, and Konami opted instead for "Standard", "Difficult", and "Expert". The individual foot-rating labels, such as "Simple", "Paramount", and "Catastrophic" remained intact. All three difficulty levels are selectable in regular play, as opposed to 3rd Mix's SSR mode, which also forced the Flat modifier. If you want to play in Unison or Doubles, be sure to hit Circle to select Game Mode instead of X. Hitting X defaults to Single/Versus. Because this game uses the arrows to spin the songwheel, players cannot use the dance pad or controller to enter stepcodes such as Little. To use modifiers, hit Start and a mini menu will appear on the selecting player's side. DDR US supports Left, Right, Mirror, Shuffle, Sudden, Hidden, Stealth, Little, and Flat.

Nonstop Courses

To simplify Nonstop selection from 3rd Mix, Konami changed Nonstop so that the difficulty was independently selectable from whichever game mode was selected (this was also necessary since DDR US did not have SSR or ReMIX modes). This style of Nonstop would later become the standard in 4th Mix and higher. To change difficulty, hit right and left to select the Level.

Trivia Info

Originally, Smile.dk's Butterfly was supposed to appear in DDR US, but due to licensing issues, the song was disabled before the game was shipped out for duplication. The song data itself is still on the disc, so this serves as proof to deny the rumor that Smile.dk simply didn't want their songs to be played in the US.

Edit Mode (for user-designed stepcharts) was also disabled at the last minute, and can be enabled using a GameShark code (sorry, don't have it).
