well heres the description:
layer:
1 - This is where the pad is, duck taped to side to stop sliding
2 - This is the middle layer, arrows are cut out so you can feel where you are stepping [good tip for n00bs that need help]
3 - This is the bottom layer, it supports the pad [especially all of those sounds you here].
well heres the pics [pics are low quality]:
Top
Bottom
Side view
Topside
this is a project i carried out myself [which mean i had no help]. I think this is a really good mod for a 12 y/o [yes im 12].
Tell me your thoughts, i am gonna cut into the pad and get out the sensors and make this a metal pad soon.
o yah costs: 15 bucks [5 more for shipping]:
$7 - wood
$1 - duck tape
$3 - pad [OMG this was the best deal of my like time. 5 years and this baby is working great!]
I am gonna add a bar, do u think i should put a bar in?
o ya i might put a page up for this, if you guys think i should. _________________

yay i am the first to reply...well i have a small request
my computer really REALLY sux (if u wana c how much it sux, right click ur desktop and click properties, then settings, set color to 16, and screen area/resoultion to 640x480) and i cant c the pictures very well. so all i ask is, what did u do to ur pad? can u post some instructions or something? also, how good are you, i dont want the pad to wear out quick, im a 7 footer, and im thinking of either
A-a modded naki, topway, (or sum other cheapo pad)
or B- a BNS ultra DX ignition
one more thing, u said its been working for five years...u have been playing since u were 7!?! _________________

wut i would do is get a cheapo pad and mod it. if the sensors break i can fix it [or tell u]. Also u can just switch pads through the mod.
heres a text pic:
1st layer - _______________
2nd layer - | ___________ |
3rd layer - |_| |_|
1st layer is where the pad is [taped or nailed to].
2nd layer i cut out the arrows so when you step on the pad you can feel where the arrows are.
3rd layer is support for it.
yah i have been playing for that long, but like at 8 i stopped and started up again at 9. i might send post some videos of me playing [im 12 but turn 12 nov. 15]. _________________

probably the best thing to do would be to take out the foam. if you want it to be flat i suggest ripping the bottom part of. I have one of the more cheapo pads that are flat but i have had no problems with it.
I am making a site with pictures and instructions...
ill post it when im done making it. _________________

First, I don't think the soft pad will last too much longer with anyone using it on an uneven surface like that.
I do like the idea of recessed buttons though, although maybe not *that* deep (how thick is your plywood, 1/2"? 3/4"?)
I think I may do the same kind of thing, except big enough for doubles (probably buying two sheets, one pretty thin and maybe of a different material, or maybe I'll just stack floor tiles to get the recessed sections). That, and I think I'll try to use Piso-Pad style buttons like this guy:
http://royconejo.host.sk/
I'm thinking it should be cheap, sensitive, and easily maintained, or at least moreso than the homemade pads I'm using now. |

the measurements for the wood's thickness should be half an inch or a centimeter.
I might make a second pad but i have a direct pad pro thing and it connects to an ltp1 port that i only have one of.
Hey do u wanaa combine pads?
[just wondering]
My plans may be a lil vague cuz im a 12 yr old and im not a nerd/freak [sry to those i may insult]. _________________

the reason i hate those pads cuz they destroy the purpose of ddr. they have a trademark pad that makes it wut it is. its not just four sensors on the floor. if you were to mode it into a pad that would be fine _________________

Those pictures are really really small. I can barely see the image with the bar, it's so blurry and out of focus, so until you tell people how to actually add the trick bar they probably won't be too interested. _________________

It seems to me that if, instead of a set of pads, if a person had a doubles setup built into his floor, that would be ten times as cool (maybe not the piso-pad way, but you know what I mean).
Here's why I like the piso-pad buttons: it seems like it would be really simple and cheap to do, and if done well (maybe with sheetmetal cutouts instead of foil tape), I think it would be easy to maintain because all the contacts are out in the open (since your conductive footwear completes the circuit). It also looks like it would be really sensitive (since, again, putting your foot down IS the switch), but I haven't experimented with that design yet.
As far as combining designs, I don't think anyone here (or on the internet generally, who talk about their designs) would be upset with you stealing parts and putting them in your own design. I liked the cutout layer in your platform, and was thinking about what I could make that out of on one of my plans to approximate the depth of the button wells in a real platform (I was thinking pegboard this morning, maybe thinner even). People put their ideas out there to share with other people. This message board is *the* place swap ideas with respect to home-built pads, at least as far as I'm concerned.
I'm not that concerned with softpad mods right now, being more interested in building a complete thing. The idea I got from this site that helped me when I was using a softpad is to tape phone cord or thin rope between the buttons on top of your pad for tactile feedback. That is, instead of using an uneven surface, tape something to to the top to make that surface uneven. A lot of people do the standard pad on top of plywood, covered in floor covering (to keep it completely flat), with something taped on top of that to make it easier to tell where the buttons are.
I say this because one of the big reasons to mod a pad is that folding and bunching is what causes tears in the plastic inside a pad and makes it stop working. I'm thinking that playing on an uneven surface would make that more likely. |

Just to spare you some dissapointment I thought I would let you know that when you go to open your soft pad and "take the sensors out" you won't find any. The pad doesn't use "sensors". Rather it uses two layers of carbon wires (just plastic with conductive crap printed to it in a pattern) seperated by a layer of foam with a pattern of holes punched all over it to allow the two conductive layers to make contact and complete the circuit. If you want to make a hard pad than I suggest looking into the home made metal pad thread. |

its only gonna be a centimeter thick [i checked]. Trust me it doesnt mess up ur sensors since the cut outs should be a LITTLE wider/bigger than the arrow.
thats wut i meant by sensors, sry for not being descriptive enough _________________
